Chambertin is the largest of the 9 Grand Crus of the Côte des Grands Crus, located at the Combe de Lavaux, a deposition hill near Gevrey. Covering an area of 0.39 hectares, the Pinot Noir vines grow on the outcrops of Bajocian limestone, covered by a thin layer of scree and excellent clay deposits.
Producer: The Tortochot estate has been in the hands of the Tortochot family for four generations. It was Paul Tortochot, in the 19th century, who established the estate from its modest beginnings in Gevrey-Chambertin. Today, it is still family-owned, now led by Chantal, who carries on the passion for wine and nature passed down from her parents and grandparents, along with the international experience she gained while working for an American oil company.
Terroir: Gevrey-Chambertin boasts a rare and unique "terroir," thanks to the "alluvial cone" originating from a valley directly west of Gevrey, known as La Combe de Lavaux. This glacier melted millions of years ago, spreading rich topsoil and subsoil layers across the area that now forms the town and extends into the plains beyond. It is no surprise that 9 of Burgundy's 33 Grand Crus come from this village, including the famous Chambertin, alongside 26 Premier Crus!
Tasting Notes: The wine unveils aromas of red fruits, licorice, and leather. With notes of cherry and brandy, it is powerful and firm in its youth, and can even seem austere at this stage. It requires at least 12 to 15 years, and up to 40 years in great vintages, to reach its full maturity.
Aging Potential: Very long aging potential.
