Château Fonbel 2020, Saint Emilion Grand Cru - Parker 90
(€41.20 L)
A lively and charming wine, bursting with notes of cherries, berries, and anise.
Winemaker and Vineyard: A very old vineyard, Château de Fonbel is one of the three properties owned by the Vauthier family, along with Ausone and Moulin St Georges. It is managed by Alain Vauthier, who is assisted by his daughter Pauline and supported by the oenologist Gilles Pauquet. The 16-hectare vineyard is located on the plain of St Emilion and features clay-sandy, gravelly, and sandy soils. The grape varieties are made up of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Tasting: Fully 70% of the Vauthier family's 2020 Fonbel was aged in tank, and that no doubt helps to explain its appealing purity of fruit. Bursting with notes of cherries, berries, petals and anise, it's medium to full-bodied, lively and charming. (robertparker.com, 04.06.2023)
Service: Serve at room temperature (16-18°C) to accompany braised endives with bacon and porcini mushrooms.
