Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste 2016

Appellation: Pauillac, Bordeaux, France

Classification: Fifth Grand Cru Classé 1855

Ownership: Miailhe family

Grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon (majority), Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc

Vintage: 2016

Origin and background

The 2016 vintage, marked by a hot, dry summer followed by a mild, sunny autumn, enabled the grapes to ripen excellently on the gravelly terroir of Pauillac. Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste produces a powerful, structured and elegant wine, true to the typicity of this grand cru classé.

Tasting

Colour: Deep, intense red with purple highlights.

Nose: Complex and concentrated. Aromas of ripe black fruit (blackcurrant, blackberry), spicy notes (pepper, liquorice), woody nuances (cedar, tobacco) and discreet floral touches.

Palate: Full, silky attack. Firm but well-defined tannins. Dense, rich mid-palate with intense fruit and lovely freshness. Long, persistent finish, marked by spicy, woody notes.

Review

- Wine Advocate: 94/100

- Vinous: 93/100

- James Suckling: 94/100

Suggested pairings

Ideal with grilled or roasted red meats (rib of beef, tenderloin), roast lamb, roast poultry (guinea fowl, duck) and rich sauce dishes (daube, civet). It also goes well with mature hard cheeses (Comté, Parmesan) or slightly blue-veined cheeses.
