Château Olivier 2015 - Pessac-Léognan Cru Classé

Origin & Production

Château Olivier is a historic estate located in Léognan, in the Gironde region, and has been classified as a Cru Classé de Graves since 1953. The 2012 vintage is crafted from a blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot, grown on a terroir composed of deep gravel, clay-limestone soils and sand. The vines have an average age of around 25 years and benefit from carefully managed viticulture. The wine is aged for 18 months in oak barrels, including 12 months in barriques.

Tasting Profile

  • Appearance: Deep red colour with violet highlights.
  • Nose: Complex aromas of ripe black fruits (blackcurrant and blackberry), black cherry and raspberry, complemented by spicy notes, liquorice and subtle hints of fine oak.
  • Palate: A smooth and rounded attack develops into a firm yet elegant tannic structure. The balance between freshness, acidity and fruit is remarkable, offering a silky texture and a beautiful length.
  • Finish: Persistent, with nuances of dark chocolate and toasted oak.

Notes & Ratings

  • Wine Enthusiast: 93/100 – A full-bodied, juicy and fresh wine with balanced acidity and ripe fruit character.
  • Vertdevin: 93–94/100 – Awarded during a 2018 tasting, highlighting the wine’s aromatic complexity, elegance and refined tannins.

Food Pairings

This Château Olivier 2015 pairs beautifully with:

  • Grilled beef fillet or entrecôte – the refined tannins complement the texture of the meat.
  • Lamb rack or herb-crusted lamb loin – a classic Bordeaux pairing.
  • Duck breast with a rich dark sauce – the wine’s fruit and spice notes enhance the flavours of the dish.
