Sarget de Gruaud Larose 2008, Saint-Julien
(€50.53 L)
Red dress, fruity nose and leather, vanilla. Round attack, strong tannins, freshness. Balanced wine.
Winemaker and Vineyard: Located in the heart of the Médoc, the terroir benefits from a microclimate particularly conducive to the expression of the vine. The nature of the soil limits the restitution of rainwater and the summer period, very hot and dry from July to September, is crucial for good veraison, good ripening and satisfactory transfer between the root system and the grape. The soil is humus, clay, sand and pebbles forgotten by the river. The subsoil is red, yellow or blue clay, then sand and more rolled pebbles, those from the Pyrenean diluvium. The gravel prevents the earth from being a compact, suffocating, blind mass. The entire ice age is embodied in these mineral landscapes.
Tasting: Medium-plus intensity nose. Very cigar box with tobacco spice and cedar. Underneath there are some red fruits like currant and plum.
On the palate, those cigar notes carry through and bring an even more savory, meaty element. Medium-plus acidity maintains freshness and adds a little juicy element to the red fruits. Medium tannins still have some grip but are rather mellow at this point. Moderate length finish ends with the same cigar box notes that have dominated this wine from the beginning. Spitbucket.net
Service: Serve at room temperature (16-18°C) to accompany a skirt steak with blackberry sauce.
