Winemaker and vineyard: In 1987, Michel Coudroy bought this small vineyard of 2 ha from the Mathias family. It is located between the prestigious grounds of Trotanoy, Petrus, Certan and Le Pin but has never been officially classified. Although, its wines have always been among the best Pomerols – in 1929, they were classified as 1° Cru. The vineyard consists of old Merlot vines.

Tasting: This pure Merlot is characteristic by its finesse and elegance. Only a few wines combine strength and fruit so perfectly, which makes it a very balanced wine. The old vines (up to 70 years) and the vinification in new oak barrels make it a wine of high quality which can be kept for 15 to 20 years.

Service: Serve it at a room temperature of 16 to 18°C with grilled or roast beef; always good with fine cheese.

“Wonderful blend of syrah, carignan and grenache with a reddish-black colour. (…) flawless structure with a light wood aroma (…) garrigue, peppermint and fresh, acidulous blackberry soften the strong tannins. With Marie-Pierre Iché’s personal touch, the baron becomes a prince.” (Guide Hachette 2017, vin remarquable)

Dark robe; its nose evokes at first fresh fruits aromas then develops towards a touch of spice. It is charming in their straight forward spontaneity. Its flavour is both firm and well-rounded, brought out by a good acidity and fine tannins.

(...) 2017 Pontet-Canet gives up beautifully fragrant notes of rosehip tea, lilacs, cinnamon stick, cloves, dried leaves and underbrush with a core of kirsch, raspberry coulis, warm plums and red and black currants plus a waft of pencil shavings. Medium-bodied, the palate is refreshing, minerally and wonderfully elegant with a well-played texture of approachable, plush tannins and a long, fragrant finish. Beautiful. (...) robertparker.com

(...) notions of warm blackberries, wild blueberries and licorice plus hints of smoked meats, black olives, pencil shavings and truffles. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is packed mouth-coating black fruits, exploding into loads of earthy sparks with a soft, velvety texture from ripe, rounded tannins. It finishes with spectacular freshness and loads of layers. robertparker.com

The opaque purple-hued 2006 exhibits a personality that mimics the superb 1996. Classic aromas of sweet black raspberries, kirsch, cassis, and subtle toasty oak are followed by a full-bodied, concentrated wine displaying moderately high tannin.
